Dedham Cricket Festival 2007

Dedham Cricket clubs festival of 2007 was its first in its 122 year history. It was the result of 2 years of planning, numerous meetings, and a great deal of hard work by many of its members and friends.

Three glorious days of cricket commenced on July25th with a fixture against ‘ Gents of Essex ’who were celebrating 100 years of playing cricket in 2007, followed by a game against Archway Graces on the Thursday and finally our traditional match against the clubs Vice Presidents Xl on Saturday July 28th. During the morning of our final day a junior Kwik Cricket tournament was run followed by BBQ and presentations by Essex County Cricket clubs Mr. David East.

The events grand marquee was decked and dressed lavishly together with traditional picket fencing, and superb catering provided by both Le Talbooth and The Sun of Dedham on alternate days.

The club was delighted to be able to welcome former England captain Mr. Graham Gooch to make a speech and offer his support to the event, Mr Ray East joined the festival on day 2 and they were both able to recount stories and anecdotes about cricket and there experiences from within the game.

A highly successful raffle raised much need funds for the club with some superb prizes, and a Cricket auction of a Signed score card by Shane Warne from the 5th Ashes Test at the Oval, a Dedicated signed cricket bat from Graham Gooch and a signed scorecard by Graham Gooch England V India at Lords 333 runs and 125 runs. This collection of unique items helped to launch the festival and set the tone for 3 exciting days.

The club was delighted that both its members and the local community enjoyed the festival and we are proud of what we were able to achieve. I hope that at some point in the not too distant future Dedham Cricket Club will host a similar event with just as much enthusiasm and with similar successful consequences for both the club and the village.

Dedham v West Mersea

12th June 2008 at West Mersea

Dedham (83 - 5) beat West Mersea (36 all out) by 47 runs

In what is now becoming a bit of a clear trend, an excellent bowling and fielding performance by the Dedham team compensated for not scoring as many runs as we might have done on what was a good wicket, notwithstanding all the rain we have seen recently. Both the West Mersea coaches commentated on how well we bowled, with the match ball being presented to Anjay for the outstanding figures of 4 overs, 4 maidens, 3 wickets for 0 runs!

Batting first the big guns of Angus and Jamie immediately set about the West Mersea bowling attack, despite the absence of both the coach, who was detained by a derailed freight train at Witham, and Dimple who was static on the M25. Anna Mortimer kindly agreed to organise the team, with the help of Kevin Wilsher and Martin Williams who once again (another trend?) took over the scorebook.

Both batsmen started well but got out when seemingly set, with Angus bowled for 6, and Jamie (12) caught once again. Archie came in at number three and scored 12 followed by Ieuan (11) at number 4. Once Archie had been unfortunately run out, Ieuan and Joe (10) continued to score freely, but when both were bowled hitting across the line the scoring rate dried up, and it took some sensible batting and good running, from Oliver and Harry Wilsher to see us to a reasonable total, but not as high as might have been expected following the start Dedham had got off to. Dedham were a little guilty of impatience in their batting, and need to learn the value of keeping the scoreboard ticking over with singles, especially when the wicket is damp, and the field set fairly deep, rather than trying to go for the big shots.

At the change of innings the Dedham team were keen to make up for any batting shortcomings by putting on an excellent display in the field. From the first over to the final wicket the energy shown was absolutely brilliant even in the face of a frustrating opening partnership which was only broken by Archie’s last ball where the disappointed batsman hit a full toss to Bertie, who somehow managed to juggle the ball and hold on at the third attempt! With Ed Mortimer keeping things very tight from the pavilion end, (despite his over long run up!) the scoring rate rose quickly. After a quiet period, Harry Wilsher was unfortunately injured when bravely intercepting a fierce drive from the Mersea opener, but that was entirely due to the cold biting wind, rather than any weakness on his part. Even the coach admitted that he would have waved the ball past, rather than try to catch it! It was with the dramatic introduction of Anjay that wickets began to fall regularly. A classic leg break completely fooled the number three, who looked a very capable bat, and the very next ball Mersea were 3 down as Anjay celebrated another victim bowled. The hat-trick ball was lofted back to the bowler but fell agonisingly short with Anjay showing excellent sportsmanship by stating that he thought it had not quite carried to him.

After Ieuan had taken a cheap wicket, Bertie took over from the pavilion end and proceeded to bowl fast and straight, beating the Mersea opener with a beautiful leg cutter which sailed over the top of the stumps and then bowling the same batsman 2 balls later. With Anjay taking another two wickets, both bowled, the game was effectively over and the final nail in Mersea’s coffin was applied by Sean Gregory taking two wickets in his only over, including one with his first ball. Sean, as 12th man had been graciously allowed to bowl by the Mersea umpire, and showed enormous promise in his only over with a lovely upright seam position. A mention must also be made of Harry Spalding behind the stumps who kept very tidily once he got his feet moving in line with the ball.

So, another victory for the Dedham team, and another good performance especially in the field. Whilst we have recognised the need to perform well as a unit in the field, the way the players have kept the energy levels high is of special note, and Angus’ captaincy has been excellent, with innovative fielding positions ad good use of his bowlers. Well done to everyone who played and thanks to Martin for scoring, Kevin for his umpiring stint and Anna for stepping in as an organiser. If Dedham can improve their batting to the level of the fielding and bowling, then we will have a great legacy for the future of the cricket club.

Dedham v Elmstead Grasshoppers

5th June 2008 at Dedham

Dedham (73-7) beat Elmstead Grasshoppers (72-6) by 3 wickets

As Dedham entered the final overs in their pursuit of the Elmstead score of 72-6, six wickets were standing with only 5 runs required. However in keeping with the senior team, when bowling at Dedham no cause is ever lost for the opposition, and after 3 wickets fell for the addition of a wide it was with enormous relief that Oliver Williams scored the winning run in the 17th over.

After a week of dreadful weather the timely arrival of the sun allowed the game to take place, for which thanks are entirely due to the effort of Roger Moss. Elmstead decided to bat first and once again Archie struck in his first over with debutant Kye taking a good catch at mid off. Bowling full and straight Archie has developed into an excellent strike bowler, albeit that he treats every wicket or long hop with the same shrug of his shoulders! With Michael Wright keeping the pressure on at the top end, and some tight fielding, the Elmstead scoring rate never rose dramatically, despite a lack of wickets. Captain Angus Lockhart juggled his bowlers well, never allowing the two Elmstead batsmen to settle, although the fielders were kept busy. Soon the boundaries started to come with both Jamie and Angus punished for bowling either too full or too short, and the pressure was released when Oliver lost his normally reliable rhythm from the top end, although he bowled much better from the church end. Dedham then began to get a bit frustrated in the field as the two Elmstead batsmen ran well between the wickets and were quick to latch onto anything loose.

The turning point was the introduction of Joe Walters who started with a wide, but then clean bowled the number three batsmen for an excellent 30. From a 15 over score of 53 -2 Dedham then picked up their game wonderfully well, with Ieuan taking two wickets in his first over including a catch behind for Harry Spalding. This was followed with the reintroduction of Archie and Michael and despite a few wides, Elmstead were unable to increase their score due to the continual loss of wickets, closing on a reasonable total of 72-6. It was another impressive fielding performance, with good support for the bowlers, and excellent backing up from everyone, with the stand out performance in the field coming from Ieuan Davies.

Batting remains the one major area of weakness for Dedham, with batsmen losing patience too readily in the face of accurate bowling. Twenty over cricket is still a relatively long time for a team to bat and in the face of larger totals we will have to learn how to construct an innings. Thus the chase of 73 was never going to be easy, but Dedham was given a helping hand by the Elmstead bowlers with plenty of extras. Angus and Kye opened the batting, and after Kye was caught at point in the 3rd over Jamie joined the skipper. After 6 tight overs the score was 17 with both playing well through the cover region. Angus received a seemingly harsh decision from the square leg umpire but can only have himself to blame after failing to run his bat in! Ieuan joined Jamie and immediately hit the first and only boundary of the inning with a fantastic pull shot. Both ran well between the wickets, taking the score to 37 by the 10th over. Disaster then struck with Jamie caught off a leading edge for 10, and then in a bizarre and slightly surreal passage of play Ieuan was run out as he slipped when backing up off a no-ball.

Archie and Michael rebuilt the innings well, despite plenty of close escapes and near misses. As the target got closer Dedham both batsmen rather lost their heads and 68 for 4 became 70 for 6 with Archie LBW and Harry caught out first ball in an excellent over from Pushman of Elmstead. When Michael was caught with only 3 needed the cat was definitely amongst the pigeons, but a calm push through mid on by Oliver, and a very helpful wide, got Dedham over the line against a very good and well drilled Elmstead team.

Congratulations once again to the boys for an excellent performance, and our thanks also extend to Mr Lockhart who foolishly offered to umpire, and to Martin Williams for scoring once again. Teas were provided by Sean Gregory Snr and Mrs Williams who also stepped in as” Dimple”, allowing the real version to celebrate her 21st birthday in peace.

Dedham CC currently has a flourishing cricket academy for young cricketers aged between 8 and 13, with a team entered into the local U13 Terrier cricket league, as well as hosting our own and participating in other local Kwik Cricket tournaments each year. Coaching takes place before the start of the season indoors, with sessions at our beautiful home ground on the Drift in Dedham occurring during the cricket season. It is intended that the number and regularity of coaching sessions will increase in the future.

We have one ECB level 1 coach presently qualifying for ECB Level 2, and two UKCC Level 1 coaches. All of our coaches have a First Aid certificate, and they and volunteers are all CRB checked. We take the safety of our young players very seriously and adhere to the ECB policy on safeguarding and protecting children as introduced in the ECB pamphlet called “Safe Hands”.

The aim of the Dedham CC academy is to provide fun and competitive cricket games and sessions for young players under the age of 13 who we hope will progress into the senior team in due course, as some players have already done. We welcome any interest from new players and actively encourage assistance from parents in all facets such as umpiring, scoring and making the teas. Dedham is very much a “hands on” and family orientated cricket club.

Dedham v Great Bromley

15th May 2008 at Dedham

Dedham (85-5) beat Great Bromley (78-5) by 7 runs

After a fortnight of glorious sunshine, the Dedham Academy season got underway on a damp and dark evening on The Drift. Inserted into bat by the opposition, Dedham’s openers of Captain Angus Lockhart and debutant Oliver Williams started sedately, treating the accurate bowling with the respect it deserved. However following the departure of the skipper LBW, Oliver was joined by Jamie De Cosimo who decided to up the tempo. Aided by wides, and some errant bowling by the Great Bromley support bowlers, they took the score to 40 by the 10th over.

The damp newly mown outfield meant that boundaries were proving hard to come by with Oliver hitting the first four of the season over square leg before he was run out attempting a tight second run. Jamie, who was dropped twice during his innings, and the new batsman Ieuan Davies increased the scoring rate through some excellent running between the wickets and after a brief flurry of wickets in the final over Dedham finished on a competitive score of 85 in their 20 overs with Jamie undefeated on 32. It is also worth mentioning that Dedham’s 12th man Sean Gregory kindly agreed to field for the opposition due to them being a player short.

After a fantastic tea provided by Anna Mortimer and Michael and Oliver’s mothers, it was in the field that Dedham excelled; from Archie’s first over with the new ball, a wicket maiden, to the last bowled by Michael Wright where Bromley needed 11 to win and could only score 3. All of the fielders were enthusiastic and supportive of the bowlers, with Ieuan taking a good catch at square leg and wicketkeeper Edward Greenwood snaring two catches without conceding any extras. The bowling was well juggled by Angus, with Archie finishing on 3 for 14 from his four overs the pick of the attack, with other wicket takers being Anjay Sorefan and Bertie Mortimer. Not even an expensive 18th over, where Oliver Wright hit two boundaries, could keep Bromley up with a run rate that had risen rapidly due to the high quality of the Dedham bowling and fielding. Congratulations to all of the players for a fantastic effort.

The thanks of all the players, once again, must go out to Dimple for her fantastic organisation, as well as to Phil Greenwood for umpiring and to Mr Williams for scoring throughout the game, helped by Jason. A great start to the season from all the players, and a result to provide hope for the long season ahead.
